It was not enough to be a critical reader. Every work that civilization had ever created must be assumed false.

Regarding certain knowledge as a mode of demonstration and discourse pursued by humanity, I hold that the more it approaches perfection, the smaller the number of conclusions it will promise to teach, and the fewer it will demonstrate; hence, the less attractive it will be, and the smaller its number of followers.

This was a method of doubt more pessimistic and universal than any healthy book reader could entertain. It was not humility except in absolute terms, closer to a rabid incredulity. What had happened to Galileo, to create in him such an unsparing, speciated vision of scientific practice? “I believe good philosophers fly,” he wrote. “They fly like an eagle, not like a dove. Eagles are little seen and less heard, while birds that fly in flocks blot out the sky with their squeaks and squalls, befouling the earth beneath them.”

Few would describe their fellow researchers in this way. Galileo had become an old man, in a cruel world, keenly aware of his growing isolation.
